FAQs ABOUT GDRA JUNIOR ROWING

Updated April 14, 2002

Q: Who can join the GDRA Junior Rowing Program in Dayton?
A: Any high school student in the greater Dayton area.

Q: How often and when are GDRA Junior Crew practices?
A: Practice is 5 to 6 days per week. For this year's schedule, check the Application Package.

Q: What do I wear?
A: Dress for the weather (layering) in comfortable but not clothing that is too loose, sneakers and socks. Bring water when it’s hot. Athletes will wear racing uniforms for regattas and may wear a navy LS shirt under the jersey or unisuit for warmth

Q: How many people are in a boat?
A: You will row boats with eight or four rowers with a coxswain, or two rowers without a coxswain.

Q: What’s a coxswain?
A: A small light person who helps steer the shell but does not row, and is combination coach / cheerleader / helmsman or woman.

Q: What is the cost of rowing?
A: There is an annual GDRA program fee and each athlete is responsible for his/her uniform and regatta expenses for transportation, food, and/or overnight lodging. GDRA will provide the rowing equipment and coaches.

Q: Can I row only one season?
A: Yes, each athlete has the choice of his or her rowing seasons, but full participation is expected for practices and regattas during that season unless the coach is notified otherwise. We encourage year-round rowing.

Q: What are the benefits of rowing?
A: Besides the excellent cardio-vascular and muscular benefits, rowing is a sport that fosters: simultaneous individual independence as well as team effort; focus of mind and body; goal-setting; hard smart work with both short and long-term rewards; discipline; respect; and is complementary to the growth, educational endeavors, and ideals of its volunteers and participants. Post-secondary admissions counselors favor students with a strong rowing background because of the above mentioned benefits and there are some excellent opportunities for collegiate rowing scholarships.
